In the fall we’ll be celebrating our 20th anniversary and this summer we’ve hired our first ever Principal. Please welcome Caron Smith! Here’s a copy of the press release:
Juneau – The Juneau Community Charter School (JCCS) has selected Caron Smith to be the first ever principal of the school. JCCS previously used a facilitating teacher model, but will now have a full time administrator dedicated to the school. JCCS serves about 100 students from kindergarten through eighth grade in multi-grade classrooms located in downtown Juneau. It is a public school directed by an elected committee of parents and teachers. Smith is currently Principal of Bridges Career and Technical High School in Madras, Oregon.
The Committee interviewed two candidates on Thursday, July 6, in open sessions at JCCS. An interview panel of representatives from the school’s certificated staff and classified staff, district administration, parents and the JCCS Academic Policy Committee conducted the interviews. Written comment cards were collected from the public during an open house with the candidates and during the interviews. All comments were reviewed by the panel.
Smith started her career as an elementary and middle school physical education teacher at Gruening Middle School and Mt. Spur Elementary School in the Anchorage School District. She has 30 years of experience in education in a variety of roles including coach, new teacher mentor, activities director, dean of students, assistant principal and principal. Smith has taught at the elementary, middle and high school level.
Smith is enthusiastic about the new position. “As I met members of this community, I got more excited about working with the Juneau Community Charter School,” she says. “This is an amazing opportunity – I get to come to Juneau and I get to work at JCCS!”
Smith holds a Masters in Educational Administration from Portland State and received her Administrative License at Lewis & Clark College. She has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Western Oregon State College.
